Artist Statement:
My interest is in light and circumstance. Affinity Delft is from a series of photographs originating in transient natural light -- specifically, ambient window light -- refracted by hand through glass or liquid that I maneuver to find/create light images as they emerge and dissipate. I photograph the coaxed image before it disappears, then explore or refine it digitally. Once the initial photograph is made -- or the refracting tool is moved, or the light shifts -- the original phantom presence is gone forever, existing only in that moment's light and gesture. Affinity Delft is a collage of this technique plus photographs from my personal archive. The pattern surrounding the figure, for example, is from a photograph of Indonesian design fabric, representing to me an allusion to Vermeer’s use of weavings, but also to Dutch colonialism of the period. Transience, changeability, and an ephemeral state of existence are at the heart of these pieces.
