Philosophy
Keep your eyes open & your camera close at hand. Don’t automatically dismiss the seemingly mundane. Never stop composing shots. Think about the time & energy that went into making & building the many things that are now left abandoned. The legacy of North America. To quote Frank Zappa, “The left behinds of the Great Society”. The narrative of our time.

Fast & loose. Be ready to stop & shoot. Catching glimpses. Capturing moments.       

Technique

I use a Nikon D7100 SLR camera. Lenses include: Nikkor 35mm: f1.8 Nikkor 50mm: f1.8, Sigma 18-250mm & a Tokina 12-24mm.  Printing I use an Epson Artisan 1430 printer. I mat & frame all my own work.

Background

I am a self-taught photographer who started when I received a Kodak Brownie camera for my 12th birthday. My dad & I set up a darkroom & I began developing and enlarging my own black and white film and photos.

 

When I was in high school I bought a Topcon SLR camera. I got my driver’s license at about the same time giving me the freedom to go further afield & shoot. Driving the back roads around my hometown I became fascinated by old barn, abandoned buildings & rusting equipment. Dubbed as “shrines” these subjects provided great scenes to photograph.

 

I graduated from the Pasadena Playhouse College of Theatre & Arts and spent the next 25 years as a professional set & lighting designer & teacher in Toronto and Vancouver. That work meant I was creating pictures for the stage and therefore composition & light have always been upmost in my mind. I retired from theatre just as the era of digital cameras arrived & my interest in Photography once again became serious.

 

My photography is fairly eclectic. As in the past I’m drawn to subjects that have fallen into ruin, places that once held so much life now left behind but still radiating the energy of the life gone by. Graffiti, caught reflections, the colours of the fall, street scenes; moments when man & nature intersect & inform.

 

In 2006 my wife & I settled on the East side of the LaHave River. In 2013 we built a Studio that now houses Haresign Photo Works.
